How to Measure for a Gun Cabinet Before You Buy
KaveySafe
Measure three things before buying a gun cabinet: the route into your home, the space around the installed cabinet, and the interior clearance your stored items need. Product width, depth and height describe the outside of the cabinet unless a listing explicitly says otherwise. They do not confirm doorway clearance, door-opening space or usable interior capacity.
Use this checklist alongside the exact product listing. Our examples use current Kavey models, including the assembled GKM-138W. All measurements below are in inches and follow depth x width x height.
1. Write down the exterior dimensions
| Model | Exterior D x W x H | Assembly |
|---|---|---|
| GKM-138W | 11.02 x 11.81 x 54.33 in | Arrives assembled |
| AK1-132D | 15.35 x 21.06 x 52 in | Assembly required |
| AKG3-138W flat-pack | 15.75 x 27.56 x 54.33 in | Assembly required |
The GKM-138W and the flat-pack AKG3-138W share a listed exterior height of 54.33 inches, but their widths and depths are different. A similar height or model name does not mean the cabinets need the same floor space. Match the complete model name and product page when comparing measurements.
2. Check the delivery route separately
Walk the route from the delivery point to the planned location. Record the narrowest doorway, hallway and stair section, plus turns and low overhead clearances. The final room may be large enough while an earlier section of the route is not.
Ask for the packaged dimensions, package count and handling weight if those details are not available. Do not calculate a packaged size by adding an assumed amount to the product dimensions. For an unassembled cabinet, check both the delivered packages and the space needed to build the finished unit. Plan appropriate handling assistance rather than assuming any model can be carried by one person.
3. Allow space to open and use the cabinet
A cabinet must do more than fit into a closed rectangular space. Check the planned position relative to adjoining walls, trim, furniture, shelves and room doors. You need access to operate the lock, open the cabinet door and reach the storage areas.
Do not assume a universal door-opening allowance. Confirm the exact model's door clearance and installation requirements before choosing a tight alcove or closet. A simple floor outline can help compare positions, but it does not replace confirmed door-swing measurements or anchoring instructions.
4. Compare interior clearance with your storage needs
Exterior height is not usable internal height. Cabinet walls, shelves, racks and door storage take up space. The shape and dimensions of the items you intend to store, including attached accessories, also affect fit. A listing's gun-count label is not a guarantee for every combination of items.
The GKM-138W listing includes a removable shelf, rifle racks, a pistol rack and door storage. Check the layout you intend to use, not just an empty interior photograph. When internal dimensions or rack spacing are missing, ask for those measurements before purchase instead of subtracting an estimated wall thickness from the exterior size.
5. Plan placement and installation
Check that the proposed location can support the product and the intended installation. Follow the supplied instructions for the exact model and supporting surface. Assembly does not replace anchoring, and an assembled cabinet still requires placement and setup.
Where the surface, fixings or safe handling requirements are uncertain, use qualified installation help. This guide does not specify a universal anchor type, drilling pattern or load rating. Those details depend on the product instructions and the installation site.

Frequently asked questions
What size is the Kavey GKM-138W?
Its listed exterior dimensions are 11.02 inches deep, 11.81 inches wide and 54.33 inches high. These are not packaged measurements or usable interior dimensions. See the full GKM-138W guide for access and layout details.
Can I choose a cabinet only by the number of guns in its name?
No. Compare actual interior clearance and layout with the items you intend to store. Shelves, racks and accessories can change how much usable space remains.
Should I pick assembled or unassembled for a small room?
Check the delivery route, package dimensions, assembly workspace and finished cabinet size first. Read our assembled versus unassembled comparison; neither format automatically solves every access constraint.
Compare models with your measurements in hand
Use the Kavey model size and assembly guide, explore the gun safe collection, or compare unassembled cabinets. For a missing measurement, ask KaveySafe about the exact model before ordering. Check the current delivery coverage and return arrangements as part of the same decision.
Model dimensions are from the linked KaveySafe listings, checked October 21, 2026. This checklist supports product selection; it is not an installation manual or a claim of a tested security, fire or water rating.
